Active leak? Stop the water first

Water coming through the ceiling is a now problem. The sequence that limits damage: contain the water inside, shut off the affected ceiling area if it is sagging, and describe the situation clearly in the request so the call comes back with the right priority.
What counts as an emergency
Active dripping during rain or melt, a ceiling that is sagging or bulging with water behind the drywall, storm damage that opened the roof deck to weather. A steady drip with a visible hole gets priority treatment; a slow stain that has been stable for months is urgent but schedulable.
What happens on the call
The roofer's first move is stopping the water: temporary tarping or a patch that seals the entry while the real repair gets scheduled. Permanent repair follows once the weather allows proper work, and a good quote separates the emergency stop from the actual fix so you know which is which.
Before the callback
Photograph what you can safely reach, the interior stain and the roof section above it. Buckets under active drips and moving anything that water ruins are free mitigation. If the leak is near electrical, that is a breaker-off situation, not a roofing one.
